William G. Herbert, Ph.D., FACSM, is Professor and Director for the Health & Exercise Sciences Laboratory in the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise at Virginia Tech. He has over 25 years of experience in developing and managing community-based cardiac rehabilitation and health-fitness programs. He has taught and supervised graduate students, conducted research, and published on topics related to clinical aspects of exercise science and legal issues related to adult exercise programs. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and an ACSM-certified Director of Preventive and Rehabilitative Exercise Programs. He has been a contributor to recent editions of the ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription and the ACSM's Resource Manual for Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription. He has served as Chair of the ACSM Committee for Certification and Education (1987-1990) and currently is Chair of the ACSM Clinical Exercise Physiology Practice Board.
