There no short or long term problems for holding your breath during a maximum effort for health individuals.

The benefit of holding your breath in a maximal effort is better statilization for the spine.

Holding your breath enables you to produce more force.

Think of it this way. Let someone hit you in the stomach. First let them hit you while in a relaxed state.

The second time tighten up you abdominals, hold your breath and take the blow.

Which method provided the most protection for you?

Good morning- I understand everything you said and i did read your previous post.I am not disagreeing with you, i just needed a better understanding of the breathing process.I ask many questions because i am passionately involved in fitness as a career change. If i come across as sounding doubtful, i apologize, that's not my intention. Many of you are quite experienced and i come here for information hard to find anywhere else. Thanks for the opportunity to be part of the forum. :smile:

Coincedentally, the Valsalva technique came up today on Dr. Squat.

It's not dangerous in and of itself, but it can cause you to black out. Make sure you do your lifting in a squat rack.
