(23)Furthermore, the bar moves straight up and down, and very few people squat in this manner, which means that the smith machine does not fit a lifters optimal strength curve. (24) The smith machine also requires that the lifter either squats with his torso much closer to vertical than would be do...

flexibility issue with SQUATS

So I've been using a smith machine to try to bump up to full squats for a while now and I think I'm ready (mostly because my paranoia issue with squats has gone away) but I have noticed tension in my inner knee. As I move through the squat my left knee will feel some very rough tension on the inside...

Thanks again Peter you've been a huge help. This is beginning to click in my head now. I went ahead and picked up the routine you gave(cept I threw on "curls for the girls", hah). I did deadlifts today and besides realizing I need shorts rather than lacrosse pants (the rough part on the side of my p...

Matt, A guy over on the crossfit boards made a series of squat videos. They're full of good tips on squatting, stretches to allow deeper squats, accessory exercises, etc. Here is the first one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq8CWv8UPAI There are six all told right now. I recommend these because th...

Unless you are only doing a couple sets of each, it is too much. For a 4 day split, you should have 3 off days.2 on 1 off 2 on 2 off or something like that. I would go with free weights instead of the machines. I don't think ab isolation is needed, definitely not oblique isolation. You don't need h...

Revamping my routine - constructive criticism please

Quick Background: I played lacrosse for a while so I already had decently built legs when I started working out. I've been hitting the gym for at least 5 months now (maybe closer to 6). I mostly started because I was really skinny and I was sick of it. Based on the responses to my previous post abou...

Every month maxim has a section of random statistics. Last month one of the statistics was the following: "The average american can bench press 41 more lbs while somebody is watching them." I go to a public gym and I generally do pretty well. I tried working out in my buddies home gym and I feel unp...

What about if you're not doing it with you're legs forward? As in you're doing a normal squat but with the smith machine? I did squats again today and used the smith machine and was actually able do them decently well...
