Exercising outdoors

Here is a brief article recently published on MedScape, a doctor's news and news aggregating site. I thought it might be of interest to folks on ExRx, since most of us are oriented to weight training, which is almost always done indoors. http://www.medscape.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);retur...

Re: Couple of questions after restarting lifting from long b

A piece of 1" iron pipe spanning 2 ceiling joists would make a fine chinup bar. You could just lay it on top of the joists, and hold it in place with one of those U-shaped thingies that plumbers use to hold pipe in place. You could get more elaborate, but unless you just love inventing creative equi...

Re: training with winged scapula / long-term program help

Front squats can be used as accessories or as main lifts. They are a good exercise. I think pistol squats are pretty gimmicky, but maybe that's just because I can't do them! Don't fall into the trap of changing your routine too often. Don't fall into the trap of not changing your routine often enoug...

Re: Safety when Lifting Alone

Hey, welcome to the forum. I agree with what Wes said, but would add one thing. Never use a so-called "thumbless" grip for bench press. This is also referred to as the "suicide grip" and for good reason. If you google "bench press accidents", most of what you find that look like serious accidents in...

How did you use the chair? Doing negative pullups, or to hook a toe on for a boost?

New Ab Exercise, the Barbell Roll-Down

Well, it's not really new. And many of you have done it. Just make sure that you're in the gym alone, otherwise it's easy to cheat and recruit someone to help you. Load the bar a little heavier than you really should. Rep out with bench press. If you can manage to get the bar up, however ugly your f...

Hey, sorry no one has answered you. I'm not knowledgeable enough on power cleans to comment, but I hope someone will jump in.

Welcome!

Paper. I plan my workouts 4 at a time, print a page, put it into a clipboard, then tick stuff off, and write in changes.

Re: Am I doing too little?

Most people prefer not to both squat and DL the same day. Some people only DL weekly ore even less often. And DB pressing can be a great arm/shoulder/chest lift. You can vary the angle--flat, incline, overhead. Do chinups bother your shoulders? Neutral-grip pull-ups? You don't mention any direct cor...

Re: Need advice

Hi, and welcome to the forum. This is a bit off topic for this forum, unless the pain is related to exercise. I will say that osteopathy is a well-established modality, perhaps better known in the US than in Canada. Not all osteopaths (doctors of osteopathy, D.O.) do manipulative treatment, so you s...

...with no place to do pull-ups. I'm so sorry to hear that! But, really? No place at all? You can get those door-way bars for, like $15 or something. Walk to the park, look for a suitable tree branch. Pull up directly on the branch, throw a towel over the branch and do towel pull-ups, or a rope for...

Re: How do I become a personal trainer? I have no idea!

With my friend's gym, since every client can be doing something different, it doesn't matter if they have similar goals or not. What I really liked is the positive, encouraging atmosphere that has developed there. If someone accomplishes something that is new or significant to them, everybody cheers...
