Re: 'spreading the bar' during bench press

I can't post links yet but there is an article and video on t nation called "Dave Tate's 6 week bench press cure" in which he teaches a powerlifting bench press technique very similar to what you've suggested jungledoc. He recomends staying tucked until near the end of the press, at which time one s...

Re: 'spreading the bar' during bench press

"This makes no sense at all. Why wouldn't a powerlifter care about pec activation? Why would a powerlifter want to leave out this important muscle?" Let me rephrase that. What I mean is that I don't necessarily care about getting more pec activation in the way a bodybuilder might. I only care about ...

Re: 'spreading the bar' during bench press

I hadn't thought about the elbow positioning before. I actually never flare my elbows and i'm very conscious of keeping them flared no more than 45 degrees during the lift until right at lockout. I do this to protect my shoulders, but also because i'm hoping to be a powerlifter and don't really care...

Re: 'spreading the bar' during bench press

Ok great! I'll try doing this technique with the empty bar and my warm-up sets. As far as knowing at what point during the lift I should start spreading the bar, will that come naturally with practice or is there a cue I should be looking for? If not from then very start of the lift off the chest, t...

'spreading the bar' during bench press

I've read in the article on t-nation titled "8 badass bench tips" as well as some others that its important to try to pull the bar apart during bench press. The article above states that the reason for this is that it turns on the rear delts and upper back muscles. In other articles (I can't remembe...

Re: Balance, weight distribution during squats

Back with an update. I've been doing the stretch recommended in the t nation article posted above nearly every day, i've forgotten a few times. At first I couldn't do it without needing to hold myself up, now some parts of the squat in this form are possible for me, including the bottom position. Th...

Re: Balance, weight distribution during squats

"How wide are your feet when you squat? How is your foot placement? Where do you set the bar when you squat and what is your hand placement on the bar?" my feet are shoulder width to slightly wider and i point my toes out by about 20 segrees. My hands are just a palm width wider than shoulder width ...

Hi everyone, sorry it took me so long to get back. I went in to the gym on friday, went on a weekend trip then returned monday and got laid off from my job. So i've been moving back in with mom & dad and other stuff. Anyway, I tried the things you guys suggested and found that with the empty bar and...

Re: Balance, weight distribution during squats

Hello again Everyone and thank you for the helpful replies, Ken, What that page does not show is the body-weight squat, where you go down and stick your arms between your knees. As a test of balance this is the starting point, can you do this? Next, can you do it properly with an empty bar? Next, ho...

Re: Balance, weight distribution during squats

Thank you stu. To clarify "The large gut you see on power lifters is not really a gut." Do you mean by this that you think my gut is in fact interfering with my form? Also, what is the best way to add box squats to my routine? Should I simply do my 5x5 squats all as box squats? As far as my diet, I ...
