Re: Does "Hard Gainer" mean anything outside of Bodybuilding

The original question was does the term mean anything outside of bodybuilding.. I would say yes; if you powerlift or O lift, you are trying to make strength gains, with or without hypertrophy. If the strength isn't improving, you might say you are a hard gainer. I think the term can be used as an ex...

Re: Neck Training

It could be just a coincidence, but I remember about 6 or 7 years ago I trained at the Lower Bucks Y which had a 4 way neck unit & I used it often. As I review my old logs, my bench press was doing very well at that time. I did a lot of incline bench work for assistance too, but I have to wonder if ...

Neck Training

How many of you do some kind of regular neck training & if so what type? Should a powerlifter that is not a wrestler or football player need to do neck training as part of a strength program?

I am fortunate to live near a couple of Bison farms that offer it for sale, but Venison is a cheaper alternative and another great source of quality meat.... Archery season opened Saturday... gotta get my license!

Re: Competition

Though I have not yet competed in the USAPL, it's also my opinion that of all the various feds out there, they are probably most legit of the bunch, especially since performing at high levels there gets you an invite to IPF, TRUE Worlds competitions. I train with a local club that competes almost ex...

Re: Concept of accessory vs complex vs tabata

Complexes & tabata are more conditioning tools you might use if trying to lose fat/water weight while maintaining or hopefully increasing muscle size & strength. Workouts are faster & more demanding of the cardio system and typically avoid maximum effort weights. Accessory exercises are typically th...

Floor press vs. standard bench lockouts

I just did some floor presses after a long time, and they felt pretty good. These are stricter than using a std bench for lockouts using a power rack, it seems. Do you guys use either or both? Do you have a preference? One nice thing is you can use short blocks under the bar & don't need a power rac...

Re: Kelso Shrugs

Stu, I'm talking about what I think Kelso's book was about... adding shrug movements to traditional std exercises. The original Kelso shrug is just a variation on a std shrug, but his book has ways to add a shrug movement to dips, benches, rows etc. I have experimented with adding the KS to dips & be...

CLA,ALA have Anabolic properties?

I have used these in the final weeks trying to make contest weight in the past, and have been using more steadily in recent weeks without really dieting. This is the only substantial change to my supplement regimen other than adding liquid D-3 recently also. I have been feeling good & able to train ...

Deadlifting; to strap or not

Even if you don't compete as a powerlifter, you rob yourself of valuable grip work by using straps regularly (Ok ocasionally). A strong grip enhances every other ( most) lifts in the long run. Check out the old strongman routines and you'll see they all emphasized grip work.
