Cliff, I think are are way over thinking the warmup thing. The numbers are GUIDELINES. John and Kenny are both right in that it is part preparation, getting motor patterns down, and part getting the muscles used to heavier weight. Definately intended for novics and us oldsters that can't jump right...

The Warm up was not bad, but each set was done closer to a Working set. IE: Resting between each set. I didn't actually time the rest periods, but it was likely 1.5min to 2min. What does truly amaze me though is how adding 5# to the bar can seem like a ton. I feel like I could squat 10-12 reps const...

jeffrerr wrote:I just want to clarify something before I answer, when you write 85#, does the # represent pounds or kilograms?

John
Pounds

85# = 38.5kg

I will fill in my profile so that it reflects my location.

John, Just to clarify, I would definitely consider myself a Novice, and I would even agree that I need the extra Reps to help my form and to program my body with the correct motions/form. Maybe, I should state the problem/question this way. When is a Warmup not a Warmup, but part of a working set? C...

Kenny and John, The two of you seem to be debating exactly what is going on in my head... My Delimna as stated is truly my Weakness and only having a 85#(Next workout) working set. The Charts on this site state that an untrained individual with my age should be squatting much more than I currently d...

Starting Strength, 2nd edition, has a whole section on this. Examples are on pg 292 if you can get access to the book (I think you said you got it from a library, or were going to). Actually, John is the one who has checked out the book. I need to either go to the library or hit up Amazon and Buy t...

Quoted from the SS wikia As a general rule, it is best to start with the empty bar (45 lbs.), determine the work set or sets, and then divide the difference between them into even increments. Some examples are provided in figure 5." I believe that Peter is correct regarding the Spreadsheet calcs. T...

Warmup Sets and Reps...

How many Warmup Sets and Reps is enough... I know that the final amount will be different for everyone. But is there a general guideline for the How much is enough. I am currently playing with the XLS Spreadsheet found at startingstrength.wikia.com for the SS routine. As an example, I punched in my ...

Pete, You are 100% correct. I should not have stepped under the bar at that weight.. In Reality, When I left the house to go to the Gym, I had in my mind I was going to put 75# on the Bar and Squat. However, After my cardio and warmup (BW and 45#), I started putting the weight on the Bar and it ende...

Thanks Guys...

After posting, I thought this exercise would be good for anyone who wore a helmet.
IE: Football player, Any Motor Sport

BTW: Stu's link is close to what this guy was doing, except this guy was in a deep squat and not sitting on a bench.

As I was leaving the Gym Today, I saw a someone doing somethign quite Odd to me. He was doing what I will call the equivalent of a Neck Curl. My thought is weak Triceps like has already been mentioned. When I first started lifting, My Press workouts were weak due to the Triceps fatiguing long before the Chest. Bench Dips and Triceps Cable Push downs worked wonders for me. The Bench Dips seemed to work best. Now, I have graduated to Parall...

I didn't end up working out at all yesterday. As the Day went on, the way I felt kept getting worse. Then this morning, I ended up staying home and for the most part have not moved from the Bed or Chair. In retrospect, I should have tried to get an appointment at the Dr office to see if they w...
