Re: coaching the deadlift
Also, meant to add... I usually go for an elevated deadlift at first. As I think you know I start people on RDL's to teach the deadlift. I do this until they can RDL a big plate each side. At this point, they actually have the ability to get into the ideal starting position and all you're missing is...

Re: coaching the deadlift
My personal opinion is that the back shouldn't be horizontal. I think you lose your glutes (and quads) when this happens. If the spine is in neutral, then it's not dangerous but I don't think it's efficient. I think the hips should be below the shoulders, how much below the shoulders is individual, ...

Re: First PL Competition Write UP
Thanks for the kind words everyone. Peter - Thanks and, nice to hear from you! Hope all is well. Kenny - thanks for going over the video like that, it's appreciated. While i've got your attention, what's your opinion on weight lifting shoes (elevated heel), for (raw) squatters? I've always trained i...

Re: First PL Competition Write UP
Well done  Thanks Stephen. proud of you man, you did good. Only took you a hundred years to actually get round to doing it too! Bench heavier next time you pansy, I've seen you bash out sets of 5 at 100 as a warm up! Excellent job on the deads, shame about the squats, you know you could've ...

First PL Competition Write UP
Finally got some videos. My sister originally had them all but smashed her phone and lost them all. A client got most of them, up until deadlift when he started to help load/spot, but I got the last deadlift by taking it off Facebook (sister uploaded it the day of the competition). This was on 3rd M...

Re: Random crap
Also, in that pic, i'm 174lbs. Right now, i'm leaner than I am there, and i'm 180lbs. I weighed myself yesterday late afternoon, though, where as competition is an early morning weigh in. Still, i've got a little heavier and a little leaner. All since moving into the Bachelor Pad. Life is officially...

Re: Deadlifts only once a week
My opinion has changed somewhat on the lower back and volume in general. Over the last year or so i've slowly increased the volume of deadlifting, squatting and lower back work I do. I think a lot of powerlifters have very poor conditioning because we live under this false belief that conditioning d...

Re: my new favourite exercise - Full Contact Twists
Personally, I class the version without the twist as a landmine, and with the twist I just call it a twist. Slightly different qualities. On the landmine if you don't have too much ROM it's fine on the knees. It's more about just moving a load across your body with a stable spine. Similar to the ide...

Re: Random crap
ooh "a shaky start" eh Kenny? Tut tut. Forgot to ask: did you wear a singlet? Haha, of all the parts you had to quote. I preferred the "explosive 230" part. Yip, had to wear a singlet. I've tried to upload a pic of my 230 just short of lock out (never done it before so don't know if it'll work). I ...

With that plank variation, if you really want to feel it, then pack the neck hard and curl your tail bone towards your face (posterior tilt). Make sure to pack the neck hard though.
Packing the neck is my new favourite thing...

Re: my new favourite exercise - Full Contact Twists
I love them. Once clients have hammered planks, side planks, pallof press, and chops/lifts, I bring these in. They're great for athletes - movement should be all hips. This basically trains the "pivot" in the hips which creates the power behind a punch, throw, or a swing (as in, bat or golf swing). ...

Re: Random crap
So, my PL comp write up seems like it's not destined to happen. My sister had all the videos in her phone. There were initial issues with getting them but it was looking promising, until she dropped and smashed her phone. She's hoping to get them back as she has every single attempt recorded. Who kn...

Re: is my gym istructure clueless?
We recently had a national level competing bodybuilder start as a PT in the gym. I was genuinely excited to work with him. The guy trains really hard, lives and breathes bodybuilding, is heyoooge, stays freaky lean even in the off season. After 4-5 months he's leaving, can't get any business. 2 of h...

Re: Follow up: tight flexors, weak glutes, and clams
I've got a couple. A recent change in my thinking - Breaking the floor apart isn't a good cue. "screw the floor apart" or "dial the floor apart" works much better. If you were looking down at your right foot in the beginning of a squat, think of gripping the floor and screwing/rotating your foot clo...
