Another knee injury question

About 6 weeks ago my knee started hurting during the morning while sitting at my desk. It was distractinly painful. I tried running that day because the pain was such that it felt like it needed to "pop" back into place (I've never dislocated anything, it just felt like something was amiss and that moving it would help). It did not make it worse, but certainly not better either.

I'd done longer/faster bicycle rides in the week before, but not immediately. In other words, if this happened the day after the ride it would have been an obvious connection. Otherwise, I have been doing normal run/walks for 30-40 minutes 3x per week. No change. And I have been lifting more, trying to learn deadlifts, but not like I'm going crazy nor pushing big weight. And again, nothing in particular the day before the pain.

Well after a few weeks it subsided so I tryed getting back to running. Yesterday I ran an easy mile or so and then a faster mile. Later in the day my knee was excrutiatingly painful. I can't put weight on it without it hurting - downstairs hurt more than up. I'm going to doctor tomorrow - GP first, but will likely get a referral.

In the mean time, I will try to walk today just to move it. As long as that does not hurt, I should be fine IMO. Now the question. In trying to get it stronger, is there an opinion as to what I should do? Stiff leg raises with no weight, light deadlifts (stiff or conventional), step-ups, or lunges? I've already posted a few times about what I consider to be weak legs despite my years of running. I'm thinking that I work to heal the knee by laying off, then walk or bicycle until it feels OK and integrate step-ups or lunges with little/no weight. I really like deadlifts so will do those, thinking they don't stress knee/quad as much as squats.

Thoughts or comments?

Oh, one other thing, I have had an odd numbness in my quad - about 3-4 square inch area on the outside of the quad about 3 inches above my knee.

Go see a specialist.

Without knowing more detail I don't have a guess what the problem is, so I wont venture suggestions about rehabbing it. In general, once the acute problem is dealt with, squats are the center of the plan.
