Calluses from barbell

A bunch of (barbell) exercises seem to mess up my hands: SLDL, Calve Raises, and Hack Squats

How do you deal with that? Its tolerable with 1 set but eventually it gets to the point where I cant lift because my hands are in pain. Its really bad if I do multiple sets of those exercises.

Should I use gloves or a lifting strap or chalk? Or use nothing and my hands might callus less?

I'm using between 150-200 lbs usually

Is it just calluses or are they bleeding? If it's the former, just let them build and after the workout, file them off. if it's the latter, carry tape with you.

I use gloves now, but used to just use bare hands. It's personal preference, but gloves may help.

I tell my kids they're "palm muscles". My palm muscles are getting huge.

Gloves aren't a good solution any more than a pad is the solution for bar discomfort on squats. They effectively change the diameter of the bar, and actually keep you from gripping the bar well. Here's a good article on the subject.

Chalk is helpful so that the bar doesn't slide in your hand.

Keep the dead skin filed off of your calluses to decrease the chances of a callus tearing, which is painful and can be a big setback in training. Don't file down into the base of the callus, just the dead skin. The callus should be smooth but still fairly hard.

I like to trim down calluses with a sharp nail clipper. Of removing a couple of layers when I'm in the bathroom.

Buy a nice pair of lifting gloves with wrist support.

You don't need lifting gloves, only chalk. Also make sure you grip the barbell properly.

"Wrist support", are you serious? How about develop some wrist strength instead?

I like gloves myself. I'm not of fan of wrist wraps, but that's personal preference. If you aren't doing heavy partials on bench, I don't see a need for them.

My solution is to keep my calluses cleaned up and short

I soak my hands and shave them down with this.

I suppose it depends on how heavily you tend to callus, but I find an emery board easy to use, and no chance of digging in and cutting yourself, which it looks like you could do with the razor blade gadget.

If your hands have been soaked, like in the bath, you can do that without the blade digging in but if your hands are dry, it's very dangerous.
