forum upgrade

Post by Ironman » Tue Mar 15, 2011 2:56 am

There has been a forum upgrade planned for a while now. I finally feel comfortable with that, so I have tentatively scheduled it for tomorrow. It will be on 3/16 1AM CDT, 6AM GMT. I just have to hear back from James to make sure he is ready.

I will be upgrading to PHPBB3.0.8. So at 6AM GMT, I will wait until everyone is off the forum, and then take it offline. I will backup the database. Then I will install the new software in the staging directory. Next I will convert the database to work with the new software. Then the old forum software will go in an archive folder, and the new forum will be moved to where the old one is now.

That whole thing shouldn't take very long. Well under an hour for sure. However there will probably be bugs to work out, and I will have to make some modifications. So in GMT, the window will be from 6 to 10AM.

I should have it back up before the end of the window. However there may be some secondary functionality, which I may have to work on over the rest of the week.

It is definitely a go. So I will be taking the forum down at 6AM GMT, which is about 3.5 hours from now.

Yea, it was very seamless. I didn't have any trouble with it. I had to make some changes to file permissions and add a line to a couple PHP scripts, but it went well. Hopefully later on today I will have time to do some testing.

You young guys must have short attention spans.

That's strange. there should actually be additional options for the phone. I turned on all the RSS and other feeds. Are you getting an error message? I understand the browsers on some of those phones are a little funky. I have a very basic phone at the moment. I'll see if I can get on with my wife's android later on tonight.

No error....just goes right back to the log in page. No problems until the upgrade. I'm using a blackberry storm. Not a big deal really, I can visit all the forums just fine, but in the rare case when I get a PM and I'm at work, its nice to be able to check.
