Re: Olympic Weightlifting
well the 48k woman's class was won by a Chinese chick with a 93k snatch and 114k C&J! Astonishing. As usual, the lighter class was dominated by Asian folk.
Re: Olympic Weightlifting
Thanks for the heads up! I just saw the whole competition. I felt pretty weak after that. There were these child-sized (Most under 150cm and in 48kg weightclass, looked like kids) asians who Snatched way over 80kg and Clean & Jerked over 110kg. That's bloody crazy. The winner squashed the competition, altough the Japanese came pretty close.

Re: Olympic Weightlifting
pfft, those tiny girls don't have to lift the weight as high, they're cheating...
I couldn't believe how strong they were. I've never really seen the women's lifting before, I'm going to have to seriously start training the olympic lifts to try and regain some shred of my manhood.
The men's +105kg is on August 7th. That'll be one to watch. I'm also going to make sure I catch the 85kg class as those guys'll be about the same weight as me, so I'll be interested to see how much stronger than me those dudes are too.

I'm excited about seeing how a local lifter, Peter Kirkbride does, too. He got silver at common wealth. Trains in a gym in my home town.
Here's a recent training video of him hitting 285kg back squat and making it look easy. I believe he competes at 94kg.

Jack Oliver and Zoe Smith have both broken British records over the last few days, and Gareth Evans and Natasha Perdue have competed. You've missed four out of our five lifters. Where have you been?robertscott wrote:i watched a bit of that today. I haven't seen a single British lifter so far

Re: Olympic Weightlifting
Olympic coverage in PNG seems pretty random, sometimes switching feeds to a different sport in the middle of an athlete's performance. Weightlifting is one sport that they have included a fair amount of, and I've caught part of it. We (speaking now for PNG) had both a male and female in the competition. The girl was eliminated straight away, the guy lasted a little longer. Still, pretty impressive for kids from a small country with no budget for training (to speak of).

matthias steiner, german, gold medal winner at peking 2008 in 105kg+ weight class. his wife died some months before the competition. he puts on 10 kg more as his personal record in that lift, you have to watch it. this is mental power!
