Racism and Health and Fitness Open Forum Discussion. Recorded June 4, 2020

Post by jas » Tue Jun 09, 2020 1:49 pm

On June 4th, 2020, I hosted an open forum discussion where seven health and fitness professionals from different backgrounds came together to share their experiences about racism and leadership.

Our focus: how to be part of the solution using our sphere of influence.
In the full sixty minute video, viewers will hear questions such as . . .

“I do not know how I can help?”
“ l do not want to offend anyone so I stay quiet”
“I never experienced racism but I want to help.”
“After today’s discussion, I feel more comfortable in discussing racism knowing I have support and I’m not alone”

We all shared our experiences with racism and for some no experience.

The sixty minute conversation proves that open discussion is a good tool and to help us come together.

Feedback from the open forum about racism and fitness professionals.

“Hi Julio, this was a great experience. Like I said in the video, I grew up in a very small town in rural Massachusetts that had no diversity whatsoever. There was one black student in my elementary/middle/high school.
Then I went to college in Iowa, which didn’t have much diversity either. My life experience with diversity has been very limited and it’s made it hard for me to feel comfortable asking people of color certain questions about their experiences, because I’m fearful of offending them or sounding ignorant or uninformed. The experience with your forum was great for me. I felt comfortable asking questions and not being judged for my questions or my experience.

While I recognize that everyone comes from a different background and experiences that shapes their perspectives, I haven’t always felt that others understand the same – but that was not the case with the forum. It certainly allowed me the opportunity to take a step in the right direction and start having these challenging conversations more.

And as a leader in the fitness industry, it’s made me more comfortable to share thoughts and questions in my own sphere of influence.”
Seven health and fitness pros honest conversation about their experiences and how to work together for long lasting change.
